Stephen has been in the Information Technology business
for nearly twenty years. For the last ten years he has focused on
maximizing the benefits of IT for businesses, governments and communities,
chiefly through the reduction of IT-related risks. The author of
more than 24
books, including the first comprehensive guide to desktop computer
security, he has presented information security seminars to numerous
Fortune 100 companies.
A keynote speaker and conference chair at ecommerce
conferences
around the world, Stephen has been interviewed as a security
expert by television and radio stations in the US, the UK, Scandinavia,
Australia and Hong Kong, including the BBC News. Now based in Florida,
Stephen is currently Senior V.P. of Education and Research at ePrivacy
Group and Adjunct Professor of Information Assurance, Norwich
University, teaching students in the Master
of Science program, recognized by the NSA as a Center
of Excellence in Information Assurance Education.
Stephen
played a key role in the advancement and widespread adoption of
firewall technology. He was responsible for the widely-distributed
NCSA Firewall
Policy Guide and the NCSA Firewall Buyer's Guide.
He is a frequent contributor to leading
industry publications. Founder of Cobb Associates, an independent
international information technology consultancy, started in San
Francisco in 1987, he served as Director of Special Projects for
the National (now International) Computer
Security Association from 1995 to 1997. He then partnered with
Michael Miora at Miora Systems Consulting (MSC), along with
David Brussin and Vincent Schiavone. This team transformed MSC into
InfoSec Labs, a leading high-end information security consultancy
with a Global 2000 client list. When InfoSec Labs was acquired in
1999 by Rainbow Technologies, Stephen stayed on for two years to
aid with the transition.
After several years of being bi-coastal (D.C. and L.A.) and even
bi-continental (North America and Australia) Stephen now spends
most of his time in North Florida with his wife Chey Cobb, CISSP,
who is also an author and security expert (she recently finished
writing Network
Security for Dummies and spent several years securing large,
complex networks for U.S. intelligence agencies). While Chey enjoys
boating and off-road racing, Stephen prefers canoeing and contemplating
the swamp life that surrounds their cabin.
